Circuit Board Art
What to do with all the spare computer equipment we accumulate? Why, get out the dremel tool and make kitschy art, of course!
I've been cutting two different kinds of shapes, really kitschy holiday shapes and somewhat kitschy geometric shapes. There is also a resource page available which i use to make all these shapes.
All of these shapes are made from either dead or seriously obsolete circuit boards, pulled from various items - motherboards, hard drive/floppy/cd drive controllers, ethernet/sound/video cards, etc. Not all boards are equal - some are thinner, some thicker, some are light brown, some are traditional green.
All are cut using a dremel tool and a variety of cutting discs and sanding heads (ok, technically mine's a Craftsman).
I wonder if there is any hazardous materials in these motherboards. I wear goggles and a facemask (of sorts) while cutting (those flying bits of hot metal and plastic can hurt!), but there are little particles of circuit board in the air for a while afterwards (the smell is very distinct, as close to a pleasant burnt plastic smell as you can get).
I'll be cutting more geometric shapes - some of the traditional dodecahedrons and others, as well as some different designs of my own. You might see some sneak previews in drawings in the data section.
If you're real curious, here is a step-by-step photo story of how i make these things.
